Assignment #4

Assignment 4  Asymmetrical collaged composition.   Due Oct 16

Purpose: To create an asymmetrical composition with strong unity using tension, compression and isolation to create a focal point as well as move your eyes around the composition.

Part. 1: Choose a theme: an object, people, animals, etc.   These could be from magazines or drawn and repeated through photocopying.  They should have a range of values.  Use no color or keep color to a minimum.

Keep in mind this is a design not a story or a picture in the traditional sense.

Arrange your composition before you get started.  It should have good asymmetrical balance and should use value to create unity through all the layers of space (figure ground reversal).  It should have an integrated focal point and use the tension and compression of objects to create an interesting design.

Consider the background as part of the design.  Shapes of solid tones or texture can be applied to the background.

Part 2:  Using cut paper create your design being careful with the craftsmanship of cutting and gluing.

Artists to look at:
            Hannah Hoch
            Kurt Schwitters

            Romare Beardon

Assignment #3

#3       Asymmetrical Abstract Composition           (due_Oct 7):

Purpose: Develop understanding of value, asymmetry, and skills with wet media.

Part 1: Make an asymmetrical abstract black and            white composition that includes a figure ground reversal.  Create a full value drawing using black and white acrylics.  Include a figure ground reversal.  Begin with a design in pencil to be critiqued.

Keep unity and movement in mind.  (shape, line)

Part 2:  Use black and white acrylics to create a range of at least 5 values.  Have at least one blended area where the value gradually changes.

Size: 10x15.  1/8” border for majors

#2a.     Compositional Movement #2a.  Due:  Sept 23.

Purpose: to create a realistic drawing with compositional movement.

Part 1:  Take a photo with your phone or camera.
The subject matter: nature.  Print the photo.  (You might want to take more than one to have a backup).

Part 2: Crop your photo to create a good design that emphasizes movement.  Drawing a compositional sketch with value.   Critique the sketch.

Part 3:  Using illustration board, create a drawing that emphasizes compositional movement in line and value. Use charcoal or soft drawing pencils.  Size 10-15.  Finish with a 1/8th border of black mat board.

Assignment #2

#2       Compositional Movements 2 (due Sept 11):

Purpose: Create an understanding of visual movement.

Part 1:  On drawing paper or in your sketchbook, determine three paths that will move your eye around the format.  Using those three pathways, create a design using only geometric shapes (you can invent hybrid geometric shapes if you desire).   You can use the same shapes or different ones for each pathway.   Each pathway will have a different value, black, white and gray.  Determine these in your drawings.  Create a visually interesting piece of work.

Think about the negative space.  Do you need it to be another tone?  If so, use two different grays in your design.

Part 2:  On illustration board, recreate your planned composition.  Paint your three pathways with acrylic paint, white, black and gray.

Part 3:  Mount your board on black mat board with ¼ inch border.

Design these on paper first.  One should be black on white, one, white on black and one will have both incorporated into the design.

Part 2.   Transfer designs to illustration board being careful to keep

Part 1.  Find 3 drawings and 3 print advertisements with strong design ideas in them.  Print a copy of each at least 6”x9”.

Part 2: Lay 8 ½ x 11 paper over them and reduce the drawing to simple value shapes and directional lines.  Be aware of the overall compositional decisions that artist has made.

Part 3. Write a description of three of the 6 drawings.  Be specific about how the artist created a focal point, how they moved your eye around the picture and how the added interest and complexity to their work.  This should be at least one full paragraph for each.
